Obsession: Black Bedrooms & Beds

Since discovering Rosson Crow's beautiful painting for Kaws, I've been pretty obsessed by the idea of a black bedroom (pretty dumb considering I wont have a bedroom in less than a week). My current bedroom is painted dark grey, and I absolutely love dark bedrooms - much more condusive to sleeping.

I love the contrasting muted primary colours she used - it's almost like those items are aged to suit the 70s theme. Even the graf canvas seems muted. Super nice detail. Personally if I was going to put together a black room, I'd probably load up black on black on black, with true primary colours as features.
I love the black Chesterfield bedhead used in the room above. It creates texture and tone over the black wall. I would love the above room a lot more if it had black carpet and a zebra hide rug.
The room above features an ornate black framed mirror above the bed, which reminds me of the Burke & Hazeldon bed below.
But the Burke & Hazeldon bed would add a whole lot more fun to a bedroom (look closely at the print on the bed head and footer). Burke & Hazeldon are so awesome.

Maybe one day I'll have a new bedroom to paint black... *sigh*

Procrastination...

Moving bites. Or more to the point, packing bites. I have removalists coming next Tuesday. And I've packed 3 boxes. Procrastinate much (obviously - I'm writing this)?

But I have filled an entire Sulo bin with crap I've accumulated over the 3 and half years I have lived here. And I've only managed to go through the dining and lounge rooms so far. God help me when I get to the attic.

I guess if nothing else, I'm getting rid of a bunch of crap I don't need. It's surprising just how much stuff I've kept. So much paperwork - I'd really like it if all of my accounts/bills etc could be sent to me electronically to save all those trees.

I need to get bubble wrap before I can pack the remaining stuff in the lounge and dining rooms. Then I have to pack my room, which is going to be a nightmare. Note to self: next place I live in requires a walk-in robe because in my current house, I've always struggled with the amount of space I have for my clothes. And shoes.
For a small closet, Carrie Bradshaw had a pretty big walk-in wardrobe. I'm sure her set up would suit me just fine, but maybe I'd need more space for shoes. In fact, as I recall, Carrie keeps all her shoes in there boxes on the show. Not a bad idea because it keeps them in good nick. But I wonder if Carrie would have had a system for organising her shoes? Polaroids on the boxes or something.

When I find a new place, I'll defs try to be more organised :)

Art, Sneaks & Bad Ass Beats

It's official - I'm counting down the days until I leave on a journey that's about as close to a religious experience as I'll ever get. Perhaps it's even a pilgrimage of sorts. I'm sure I'll return enlightened, but I doubt my suitcases (or credit cards) will.

After a ridonkulously hectic 12 months, I'm rewarding myself with a 2 month mission in search of the best art, sneakers and music I can find across the globe. I need a holiday in the worst possible way - and I intend to make the most of it. Here's the low down...

Art
After exploring the street art of Prague, I'll be hanging out in Berlin for a week or two. Then I'm heading straight to Bristol to catch the last days of Banksy vs Bristol Museum.
Then I'm off to London where I intend find myself an Insa print and go back to the Tate Modern (I went there back in 2001 not long after it opened) for some modern cultural stuff.
Next up, I'm finally hitting Hotel Fox in Copenhagen. I've been jonesing so hard to visit this hotel. When it first opened about 5 years ago, I was completely smitten by the place. It has 61 completely individual rooms designed by 21 designers, including Aussie collective Rinzen.
Then I'm heading for the Netherlands where I'll be on the hunt for van Gogh, Escher and graf. This time I'll definitely be hitting the Escher Museum in the Hague.
Then I'm heading to Spain, where I plan to visit Dali's House. I'm a huge Dali fan and I have wanted to visit his house and studio for years - last time I was in Europe I wanted to go, but just never got there. I've been to Dali exhibitions all over the world, but now I want to visit his studio.
I'd also love to hit the Gaudi house in Spain. I'm sure there's a bunch more shows and stuff I'll hit while I'm there but these are the things I'm going to make sure I get done!

Sneaks
Here's the lineup of sneaker joints I intend to hit while I'm away...

Germany
Footlocker
Kickback
Niketown
Overkill
Selected
Snea-Q
Snika
Solebox

UK
Angry Dave's
Niketown
Size?

Netherlands
90sqm
Concrete
No Boys Allowed
Patta
Urban Unit

Spain
24kts
Munich
Trust Nobody

Japan
I'll be doing over all th spots I hit in Tokyo last time, but this time I'll also be hitting Osaka. All in all it's a pretty crazy itinerary of sneaker shops - and that's not even beginning to go through all the other fashion spots I intend to hit. Hello Top Shop London!

Beats
First up (and I don't know if this can really be considered beats but I'm throwing it in anyway) I'll be going to see Faith Now More in Prague. I'm fairly sure tears will be shed. I posted the set list they are playing a few weeks back and it is epic (pardon the pun).
Next up I'm hitting Ikon in Berlin to see Rusko play. I seriously can not wait to see this fabulous daywalker play again. His sets are inspired.
In London, I'll be heading straight to Night Slugs, a monthly club night run by Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990. These guys are pushing the new sound of 4/4 bass heavy house and beats and I seriously can't wait to see what they can do.
I'm also going to check out Yo Yo, a weekly London Thursday night that features guest djs like Mark Ronson, Sinden Skream on a weekly basis.
Then on the Friday night (if I'm not nursing a hangover so large I can't get there) I'll be heading out to Fabric Live at Fabric for a spot of Drum n Bass. Unfortunately Fabric hasn't released a lineup for the dates I'll be there, but if their recent lineups are anything to go by, I don't think I'm going to be disappointed.
I haven't really planned much further than that music wise mostly because set lists have been posted that far ahead. I might hit Get Loaded in London to see Crookers. And I'm sure there'll be heaps of mad stuff to see and do in Netherlands, Spain and Japan - especially in Ibiza for the closing parties.

2 weeks and counting! Can't wait!

But first...

Before I get to Patta, I'll be copping these sweet STs from Size? in London... and of course, my darling Twilights. Damn you infrared colourway selling out. 29 days yo!

Pretty in Pink

I've got a date with these Nike Structures in white/china rose-neutral grey. I'll be visiting Patta in exactly 39 sleeps. Oh yes, they will be mine.

If they still have them that is.

If Kaws had a bedroom, it might look like this

This is not a real bedroom. It's a painting Rosson Crow did for Kaws. Here are Crow and Kaws at Kaws' show in February this year. They look cute together ;)
Rosson Crow is known for her paintings of classic interior design.
In the painting for Kaws, Crow took a bunch of items from Kaws' house and painted them into a 70s bedroom interior. It's a beautiful interpretation of someone's elses personal items and I bet Kaws really wished this was his real bedroom when he saw the end result!

You can't fight the inevitable...

In April 2006, we bought a house.
A 2 bedroom railway terrace with a few basic renovations and lots of original features. It didn't look like much to begin with - the paint job was shabby and it needed some love. We wanted to make it a home. And I began blogging my interior and reno adventures.
We didn't have much cash at first, but what we did have, we spent on paint.
And paint we did - some rooms twice (the lounge room ended up purple at first, and the hallway was painted blue and ended up looking like a Smurf's back passage). We learnt a lot about paint. I choose crazy colours. He hated the crazy colours. But he mostly liked the rooms in the end.
We decided that when we had the money, we'd finish the kitchen, and renovate the bathroom and backyard.
We gave the kitchen a mini makeover: installing new benchtops, sink and installing a washing machine under the bench. And painted a chalkboard as a feature wall.
Then we could get rid of the tardis (the makeshift laundry in the backyard).
We also got Stella - an American Staffordshire Terrier. And she really messed up the backyard.
She ripped washing of the line (so we got rid of the clothes line). She dug holes all over the yard (that was good enough reason to concrete the whole thing!). She jumped on us (and covered us with dirt). We loved her anyway.
Then we added another family member. Stanley, a mini dachshund. Stella and Stanley ruled the backyard with their dirty paws.
We started to renovate the backyard.
The dogs got boarded, and the builders moved in. They ripped out the tin fences and brought in loads of bricks. The council built a driveway. Walls went up and the garage door was installed. Pavers were laid. The backyard was almost complete.
The biggest design flaw in the house was that the bathroom and toilet were seperate, and that there was no proper space for the fridge in the kitchen because you needed to walk through the kitchen to get to the toilet. This also meant the fridge sat right outside the toilet door - and the thought of fecal matter floating into the fridge eventually got the better of us. So we decided to make the toilet and bathroom one room, and close up the wall in the kitchen so there would be a proper spot for the fridge.
I spent alot of time and energy designing the bathroom myself. This was harder than I thought, seeing as I had never designed a bathroom before. I chose everything from the fittings and tiles to designing the custom build vanity. Even harder was having no bathroom for weeks and weeks - which was extremely stressful. Having to go to the pub or friends houses for toilet and showers was awful. But it was finally finished (well - almost).
Unfortunately 'we' became 'me' about a year ago, and I was left on my own in the house when the renovations were almost complete. Even though I'm really proud of the work that was done, I'm still a little sad it was never quite finished.

For the last year I've lived here with the knowledge that maybe I wouldn't be living here forever. I never knew just how attached I would become to this house - maybe because this is the first house I really feel I can call my home. I knew that there was a good chance I'd be leaving it - but I decided to make the most of living here while I still could.

My friend moved into the about 12 months ago, and it was one of the best things that could have happened at the time. I think we really needed each other right then and we have become the best of friends. We turned the backyard into a canvas, and the lounge room into a studio. We've shared everything from secrets and tears to apple pies and beers since then. I can't really imagine my life without him now... :)

Sadly, it's time to leave my gorgeous little house. It's difficult to imagine closing the door for the last time, and knowing I won't have a place of my own to come home to in the early hours of Sunday mornings, or to spend some quiet time on my own in the 'reading room'.

But it's exciting too. Time for a new adventure...
