Top 10 Clubs in the World 2009

Going to Berghain last got me thinking about the best clubs in the world (plus I can't think of one in Sydney I'd bother to include). Here is the DJ Mag Top 10 clubs for 2009 (in order):

1. Berghain (Berlin, Germany)
2. Fabric (London, UK)
3. Space (Ibiza, Spain)
4. Womb (Tokyo, Japan)
5. Amnesia (Ibiza, Spain)
6. Ministry of Sound (London, UK)
7. Pacha (Ibiza, Spain)
8. Watergate (Berlin, Germany)
9. D-Edge (Sao Paolo, Brazil)
10. The End (London, UK)

So far this year, I've been to 2 of the top 10 clubs in the world. Berghain, and Womb. I'm still in Berlin, and I have every intention of heading to Watergate while I'm here. I'm heading to Fabric next week and potentially I could drop by Ministry of Sound while I'm there. In just under a month I'll be in Ibiza - so I'm determined to visit Space, Amnesia and Pacha whilst I'm there. The only 2 clubs on the list I can't go to are D-Edge in Brazil (I'm not heading to Brazil any time soon) and the End, because it's closed down. With a bit of luck, I might be able to hit all the rest...

Berlin: Spectacular Spectacle

Saturday in Berlin spent curled up all fetal, recovering from the night before. Eventually made it to a free festival in the park and met up with Christine & Steve. Rode Christine's pushy for a bit. Drank some Becks, ate 1.95 EUR pizza. Yes, a whole pizza for 1.95 EUR (less than $4!). And it as so tasty too.
Came home and got ready to go to Berghain. I tried to dress so I would neither stand out or fit in. I know they have a mysterious door policy, so I want to make sure I make it past the bouncers. Berghain is close enough to walk to from my hotel. It opens at midnight, so I started walking there about 12.30am. Along the way, I met 2 girls and a girl from the Netherlands who asked me for directions to Panorama Bar (which is part of Berghain). We continued walking together, and then an American guy name Ben, who now lives in Sydney, also asked us for directions. He joined us to.

Thank god we go their early. The line was already massive. Luckily we only waited about 10 minutes in the line before we were at the front of the queue. 3 Fuzzy-type Australia men were denied entry in front of us. They kicked up a stick, because obviously they think they're God's gift to clubbing in Australia. Sucked in fellas.

Ben and I decided we should act like a couple to better our chances of getting in. The door tactics are quite intriguing, and they seem to be happy to let boy/boy, girl/girl or boy/girl groups of 2 in now problem. If you're a girl/girl/boy or boy/boy/girl group of 3, you're ok too, but groups of men, women or mixed gender that were larger than 3 people seemed to get turned away. Our plan worked, and we were ushered through the doors. Once inside, I kind of worked out what the deal was with the strict door policy...

On entry, you were searched head to toe vigorously. Not the pat down you get at home - I'm talking every pocket checked, bags emptied out, definitely no cameras allowed. It was 12 EUR to enter, and they had a huge cloak room to put anything you don't want to lug around. You enter on the ground floor, which is a cavernous concrete space with high ceilings, leather couches and a a bar set in front of the infamous dark rooms.

You climb a huge staircase at the top of which you've entered the main room, which is called Berghain. The Funktion One sound system dominates the huge concrete, metal and glass space, with 1 of 4 towering speaker stacks in each corner of the dance floor. The ceiling height of this space is about 3-4 stories high. I stood in the middle of the dancefloor, and the sound was perfect. Quite a technical feat, because of the awful acoustics that would go hand in hand with using a concrete power plant as a night club. Last night, they were playing banging techno in Berghain. Mookie and Vic would have been proud.

There are dark corners, hidden bars and secret rooms everywhere. If you climb up another flight of stairs out of the main room, you'll find yourself in the Panorama Bar, which has an amazing view of East Berlin. In Panorama, they were playing mostly Minimal and Tech House - a lot more gentle than downstairs. But personally I preferred the music in Berghain, and spent most of my night down there.

Before I said once I was inside I could understand the odd door policy. I'd read the history of the club earlier, and it actually started as a male-only fetish night called 'Snax' quite a few years ago. This night was the catalyst for another legendary Berlin club, 'Ostgut'. Ostgut closed down in 2003 when the venue was demolished, and a year later, Berghain opened to take it's place. The 'Snax' club night still takes place once a year... but a large component of the crowd on any night is male, gay and openly into fetish. It stands to very good reason that groups of yobs like those Aussie blokes don't get in because the club clearly wants a happy balance of all kinds of people, getting along and having a good time - which is exactly how it seemed to me.

There were lots of very scary looking pumped up German fetishists - the kind you don't fuck with (unless, of course, that's the type of thing you're into). I think I even saw the Techno Viking. But the best outfit of the night was an older gentleman, wearing pretty much exactly what this bear is wearing:
Plus a gag ball and knee pads. Yes knee pads. I think it's nice he puts safety first.

I danced for quite sometime in Berghain, and chatted with a lovely gay couple who were dressed the same and could hardly speak English. They were so cute in their checked shirts. There were lots of very tough looking gay men at Berghain - and I like their style. They don't fuck around, they aren't queens, they don't talk like fairies, they dance hard and they look like real men. And there seemed to be a bit of a Droog fashion thing happening - lots of white skinny jeans, braces and shit-kicking 18-hole doc boots. If I didn't know better, I would have thought these dudes were Neo-Nazi types.

It got to about 5am and I decided it was time to call it a night. But before I left, I had enough courage to take a wander through the maze of hidden dark rooms downstairs. Maybe girls don't normally go back there (no pun intended), but I needed to know if what they say goes on in those back rooms is true. Berghain has a policy of accepting sexual behaviour openly, and the dark rooms are used for people who'd like a little privacy. The answer is that what they say goes on in Berghain, remains in Berghain. I'll let you make up your own mind on that one!

It's not to everyone's taste, but this is a club that certainly has it's own mystique. From the strange door policies to the breathe taking venue and sound, it's really easy to understand why Berghain was ranked the number one club in the world in 2009.

Sounds like Trouble...

I want - nay need - this black and red Trouble & Bass tee. Fingers crossed I can pick one up when DTL tours for Stereosonic.

For your listening pleasure...

This is gonna start in about and hour or two if you're interested. Bok Bok and Manara own. Should be a mad jam - click here for the stream link.

Berlin nights

This week I plan to hit a couple of the best clubs in Berlin. Unfortunately Wed, Fri, Sat are the big nights, so I only have tonight, which is Saturday, and next Wednesday before I go (and Rusko on Friday of course). So I'm choosing my locations carefully.

Tonight I'm going to try my luck at arguably Berlin's best club - Berghain. It's a pretty unique club inside some kind of old factory. I've been told to check out Panorama Bar in there too. I have absolutely no idea about the DJs who are playing, but Mookie tells me I should go just for Len Faki. German techno ja. As Mookie described - spatial, dark and a hard basline. Sadly you can't take photos in there, so these are going to have to do.
I'm a little sad that Berghain resident DJ Ben Klock won't be DJing tonight. He is probably the most handsome DJ I've ever seen. You be the judge.
Right across the road from my hotel is legendary Berlin techno club Tresor. Tresor is also in a factory, and is perhaps a little less polished than Berghain, but stunning none the less. The place reminds me so much of the Glebe Silos it's ridiculous.

Next Wednesday Joey Beltram (NYC techno legend) is playing the Tresor room. Considering it's right across the road and it's Beltram - how can I not go?
Then of course, Friday night I'll be going back to Icon to see one of my most favourite DJs, Rusko. After checking out the digs last night, I think Rusko is going to go down a treat in there. It's going to be a very inimate crowd, much like when Ki Ki and I saw him play at Phoenix. I seriously can not wait to hear what he plays. Will it be new stuff, or new stuff and old stuff? How different will it be to when I saw him earlier this year? He's gotta drop My Mouth or Oh My Gosh, but I hope he drops stuff like Kissed a Girl and Cockney Thug cos it just wouldn't be Rusko without them... Either way ze Germans better down for a hectic night of dubstep!
Then it's off to Ol' Blighty for another week of mayhem...

Berlin: Burgers, Bad Weather, Becks & Beats...

Met up with Christine (Sherlock's friend) for burgers and chips. Now that was a tasty burger - tasted like a Whopper should taste. Chips with mayo and spicy tomato ketchup rule. My fingerstache still amuses people. WIN. Weather turned sour and it starts to piss down. I have my new Jeremy Scotts on. Why do I always manage to wear new sneaks out for the first time at the most inappropriate moments? We decide to call it a night because of the rain. Damn you Berlin weather!
It stopped raining. But it's cold. To stay in or go out, that is the question. Maybe that's a rhetorical question cos the answer is obvious. Go out - you're in Berlin! Made my way to Icon. It's in the middle of no where. At least now I know exactly where it is for Rusko next Thursday. Bought 2 bottles of Becks at the supermarket for 1.50 EUR. That's less than $3! No wonder I keep drinking beer - it costs less than Coca-Cola. It's ridiculous I feel compelled to drink it irresponsibly because it's so cheap. Chatted to some Poms outside the club who thought I was weird cos they'd never heard of the different genres of electonric music I like. According to them, only 3 genres exist - house, electro and techno. WTF? Dumbasses.
Suddenly there was a huge lineup outside the club right on 11.30pm opening time. I better get in line. Waited, showed I.D. and paid a nasty cover charge of 15 EUR. All in all it's a pretty small club, but they do specialise in Drum'n'Bass, dubstep, 2 Step and various sub genres and crossovers. Booze was way exy. Heaps of hot German dudes. Redbull, Redbull, Redbull. Met a guy from California who designs sunglasses for Paul Frank. Talked shit to Germans for hours. Mad funny.
I think they really like Flock of Seagulls here, cos everyone dresses like them. I lost count of the number of half shaved heads, fringes covering eyes, sunglasses at night and oversize sports jackets. Not to mention pointy toed shoes, zebra striped jeans and gold chains.
Aoki was alright - wasn't really impressed with track selection. But then again I talked a lot of shit to ze Germans, so I probably wasn't really paying much attention. Ruined my beautiful map with sweat from dancing. Left after Aoki finished, caught the U Bahn home. Am amazed it was still running at 4am.

I love Berlin.

Berlin: The Cop

Somehow today I managed to get to all the shops I really wanted to, and buy myself a few choice items that has my Deutsche shopping desires sorted. To achieve this, I covered about half of Berlin, but thankfully, the shops I wanted to visit were along pretty much one U-Bahn line, which made life easy.

And from the U-Bahn, I saw a few Poet throw ups. I was pretty stoked!

First I headed to Solebox, where I nabbed a pair of the brand spanking new Adidas x Jeremy Scott rainbow sequined high tops. So shiny. They also had a pair of Puma x Solebox exculsives that were kick ass, but they didn't make them in sizes smaller than a mens US9. And there was the new David Beckham ZX8000s, but they were a little too... yellow.

While I was over that way, I visited Niketown, Adidas and Puma... but I figured that when in Rome - or Berlin as it may be - do what the locals do, and buy Adidas. I just can't bring myself to buy Nikes here (even though I saw quite a few pairs I'd never seen before, including the very first pair of Twilights I've actually held in my hands!).

Then I hit Overkill, and got myself an Overkill tee. The guys there were nice enough to help show me where I could find four Graffiti Halls of Fames in Berlin. So hunting those might be my plan for tomorrow.

Then, I treked to Kickback, which had an awesome pair of pink and grey Twilights. They didn't have my size. So I admired the grey STs for a moment, even trying them on. But I couldn't bring myself to buy Nikes.

Then it was off to Downstairs and Yard 5. Downstairs was pretty shite and ironically it's not even down any stairs. Considering the two stores are located directly across the road from each other and Yard 5 is so frigging awesome, I don't understand how Downstairs stays open. Anyway. I was super stoked because Yard 5 not only had Kweens Destroy tees, they also had Poet's I Love Tags tees. So I got one of each. I love Poet. I also got a present for DBOE, as promised (you'll have to wait for your package to arrive to see what it is Mr!). I also bought a COPE2 canvas. It's quite small, but it's really cute and only cost 10 euros. Bargain I reckon.

Quite a nice little haul I think. And I feel satisfied I don't need to buy anything more here in Berlin... for now ;)

PS: I have made an amazing map I will be scanning and putting up when I get home as part of a guide to sneaker/graf shops in Berlin (once I'm home). Stay tuned!

Modell Bauhaus

Hitting Modell Bauhaus in the next few days me thinks. I love Europe.

Prague to Berlin

Still waking up far too early. Got to see the sunrise over Prague one last time...
Decided to catch an earlier train to Berlin. Struggled with my bags on trams and trains. Mental note to self: only take half as much as you think you need. At least a First Class seat for the train ride to Berlin makes up for it. Chatted to a Yank on the train platform. Boarded, but got on the wrong carriage. Fought my way through cattle class, back to First Class. First Class is the shit.

Had a little nap time, then started looking for graf out the window. Tracksides have been non-stop since crossing the German border. There are so many I can't keep up taking photos.
As we get closer to Berlin, the quality of graf will get better I assume... seems to be so far. The train ticket officer had a moustache, but she is a lady.

Arrived in Berlin at about 3.30pm. It's was a scorcher here today - 30 in the shade. Naked Germans in parks everywhere. Found my way to my hotel - had to walk a million miles to get to it from the nearest station though. No wonder everyone rides pushies. WiFi in my room FTW! Even though this room isn't as nice as the one in Prague, it's still pretty rad. And actually quite close to good stuff like Overkill and Watergate. Planned out tomorrow's sneaker hunting expedition on a map. Can't wait.

Flynn suggested I check out Bar 25. It didn't seem far away, so I walked there - but the line when for miles. So I walked along the Berlin Wall past the O2 Arena and up to Watergate (below).
Watergate was closed, but there were heaps of cool bars nearby. I think I'll hit Watergate tomorrow night. Such a sweet set up.

I had a beer (yes, another beer) and wandered around. Beers cost 1 euro. 1 euro - that's less than $2! Found Overkill - it's such a rad shop. Can't wait to head back tomorrow! Defs need to hire a bike - this place is so spread out.

Now I'm kicking back, drinking a sweet apple cider...

Dude looks like a lady

WTF has happened to Steve Tyler? I mean, I know the dude is ancient but really... does he have an eating disorder now too? How did he get so sickly thin and frail? Obviously he's a naturally thin dude (see sexy young Tyler below), but this is way too far.
Maybe he's sick... :(
